How stories work

Last updated 3 October 2026

A story is a DataBaller answer published as a page of its own, so anyone can read it, with or without an account. The Stories page lists every one, newest first, and you can narrow the list by league, team or player.

Where stories come from

Every story starts as a question somebody asked DataBaller. When an answer is finished, DataBaller checks whether it would hold up as a public page. Most answers don't, and stay private. An answer is published only when all of these are true:

  • It is about the NBA, NFL or MLB.
  • It makes a real point and backs it with numbers.
  • It makes sense to someone who never saw the question.
  • Any ranking it states, such as "the best" or "third-most", agrees with the numbers.
  • It is not about your own fantasy team or your own bets, and it is not betting advice.

When an answer passes, DataBaller writes it a headline and a one-line summary, and it goes up as a story.

What a story shows

The answer, under its headline and summary, with the date it was published and tags for its league, teams and players. Click a player or team name to open their details in the panel beside it, and use the box at the foot of any story to ask a follow-up, which starts a new conversation of your own.

A story is a snapshot. Its numbers are the ones that were true on the day it was published, and it does not update as the season moves on, so check the date before reading it as current.

You can read every story without signing in. The player and team details beside it need a free account.

Your answers and your privacy

A story never carries your name, your email address, or anything that identifies your account. It is presented as DataBaller's analysis, not as yours. When you are signed in, My stories on the Stories page lists the ones published from your conversations.

  • On a free account, some of your answers may be published. The Terms set out the permission.
  • On a paid plan, you can turn publishing off for your whole account on the Account page, or for a single conversation.
  • To take a story down, email privacy@databaller.com and we will remove the page, its search listing and its stored record. Deleting your account removes every story published from your conversations.
